1969年、自らを“ゾディアック”と名乗る男による殺人が頻発し、ゾディアックは事件の詳細を書いた手紙を新聞社に送りつけてくる。手紙を受け取ったサンフランシスコ・クロニクル紙の記者ポール（ロバート・ダウニーJr）、同僚の風刺漫画家ロバート（ジェイク・ギレンホール）は事件に並々ならぬ関心を寄せるが……。

As a work of nonfiction, the mission of this film is not so much to entertain as to inform, and it does this exceptionally well. The film is helmed by David Fincher who is responsible for many other meticulously executed masterpieces such as The Game, Gone Girl and Fight Club. Here Fincher takes us on a journey back in time. On screen, the film may not look like too daunting of a project but consider what it took to recreate the sets and backdrops of the time. The realism is such that you might feel you're watching a documentary and, in a sense, you are. As far as entertainment goes, there isn't really much to offer. Robert Downey Jr. does a great job of playing the only character he really ever plays, while Mark Ruffalo shows considerable range compared to his later Marvel work. Brian Cox is always a joy to watch but Jake Gyllenhaal is the real standout, portraying the obsessed Robert Graysmith opposite Downey. If you're already familiar with the source material, this film will take you back through it in chilling detail. If you're not familiar, pay close attention and you'll be rewarded with a, sadly true, gem of a suspense thriller worthy of multiple viewings.
