Man, I miss the 2000s big budget historical epics. This movie is great. It has aged phenomenally, too.

Though it deviates from the Illiad, its still a great movie with a great cast.

As someone who's curiosity around Greek mythology is deep, I thoroughly enjoyed Troy. While I wouldn't call myself a scholar on all the ancient stories, I am well aware that this film deviates heavily from the original myths and is packed with historical inaccuracies. However, if you can look past that, it is actually a pretty damn good watch. The filmmakers managed to compress a massive, sprawling legend into a solid three plus hours of incredibly well told storytelling. Purely in terms of epic, big-screen entertainment, it absolutely delivers.

They don't make sword and sandal flicks like this anymore. TROY is beautifully shot, and Petersen's more realistic take on this legendary war epic is a sight to behold. There are no subtextual conversations from the POV of Zeus, Hera, or any of the other various Gods of Olympus. The film is from the POV of the mortals who loved, fought, and died in Homer's epic, and in doing so - Petersen grounds the film in a world that feels "real". Brad Pitt seems like he was born to play Achilles, as was Eric Bana playing Hector. Orlando Bloom, fresh off of Lord of the Rings, portrays a splendid Paris, and Brian Cox as Agamemnon was a brilliant choice. Peter O'Toole as Priam couldn't have been better, and Brendan Gleeson, Diane Kruger, and Rose Byrne all bring their A-game. If I had any complaint, it's that I would have loved to have seen Sean Bean as Odysseus in a follow-up in The Odyssey, but that ship has long sailed to Ithaca. On that note, I am very much looking forward to what Christopher Nolan does with The Odyssey (hoping he keeps the mythological/supernatural elements). Overall, TROY is underappreciated and a fantastic piece of film history. Highly recommended!

"The Gods envy us. They envy us because we're mortal, because any moment might be our last. Everything is more beautiful because we're doomed. You will never be lovelier than you are now."

Boy oh boy! A large-scale adaptation of Homer’s Iliad. And what a great movie this is! After Gladiator I'd rate this best sword and sandal -movie. Many great lines, super closeup shots, tight fight scene coreographs. Diane Kruger at peak hotness too as Helen. Even Sean Bean survives :D

An Epic Film of a legendary tale. Well done. In over three hours I only saw three tiny errors. Two were Hectors rubber armor flexing as he donned it and lastly the harness showing when a Trojan is hung out a window. Brief minor glitches. The rest of the film is top notch. It loses it's luster after you watch it three or so times, but none the less, this holds up fine when compared to other Epics like Ben-Hur, The Ten Commandments, or Cleopatra and their ilk. Movies this good don't come along often. Watch it!

Achilles’ War – Not Troy’s The extended cut of Wolfgang Petersen’s 2004 film Troy surprised me more than I expected. While it still carries the weight and tone of a grand historical epic, it’s now much clearer what this film actually is at its core. It is not a true adaptation of the Iliad and definitely not a balanced ensemble drama about the Trojan War. The entire film is built around one character alone: Achilles. The title might even feel misleading. You walk in expecting gods, fate, and the sprawling myth of Troy, but instead the story is framed as a tragic meditation on glory, violence and death, all centered around a man whose only purpose is to be remembered. Brad Pitt delivers a cold and physical Achilles, more a force of nature than a traditional protagonist. His performance avoids sentimentality and brings out the detached emptiness of a warrior obsessed with legacy. Once you accept that Troy is not telling the full myth but rather the tragedy of Achilles, the film starts to make much more sense. Everything else, including Troy’s fall or Helen’s role, becomes secondary. The decision to end the story shortly after Achilles’ death feels abrupt at first, but it is thematically perfect. The film dies with its hero, and trying to stretch it further into Odysseus or the sack of Troy would belong in another film entirely. The extended cut restores over 30 minutes of footage and changes the tone in several key scenes. It is more violent and raw, with bloodier battles and more political nuance. It corrects some of the theatrical version’s odd pacing and fleshes out side characters like Briseis and Agamemnon a bit more, though never enough to truly balance the story. The added material gives the film a grittier atmosphere and places it more in line with the post-Gladiator wave of grounded, dirt-under-the-nails epics. Visually, Troy still holds up. Petersen went for a realistic, physical style with minimal use of CGI, and it pays off. The set designs, armor, and locations feel tactile. The duel between Achilles and Hector remains iconic cinema. Eric Bana brings a grounded nobility to Hector and makes the tragedy of his death hit hard. Watching Peter O’Toole as Priam is another highlight. His scene pleading for Hector’s body is deeply moving and stands out as one of the film’s rare emotional peaks. Troy is not without flaws. It compresses a ten-year war into what feels like a few weeks. The gods are absent entirely, which may disappoint fans of the myth. Some characters, like Paris or Menelaus, are reduced to one-note roles. But the film does not try to be everything. It is not Homer. It is not a myth. It is a modern tragedy about the cost of legacy. And for what it sets out to be, it succeeds far more than its reputation suggests. The extended cut, in particular, makes it clearer that this is not a messy blockbuster but a focused and deliberate character study wrapped in an epic’s clothing. A flawed but compelling war tragedy that does justice to the myth’s darker edges.

One of my favorite Brad Pitt movies. I love the story line throughout the movie. It has Love, betrayal, war, and blood and gore. It tells the story we all heard so much about in high school. A once great city destroyed by politicians. And now, we repeat the cycle with todays politicians.
