- Garrett Wilkins2026年6月5日If your mind goes completely blank trying to figure out why The Monkey didn't click, it is likely because the movie itself is a massive contradiction. Director Osgood Perkins tries to pivot away from the cold, suffocating tension of his usual work to deliver a hyper-violent splatterpunk comedy, but the two halves just cancel each other out. The central premise-a cursed toy that triggers random, gruesome deaths-is treated like a loose punchline rather than a source of genuine stakes. Because the narrative gives next to no explanation for how the toy actually got its power, the internal rules feel completely arbitrary. The shock value wears off incredibly fast, leaving you watching a sequence of increasingly ridiculous accidents that feel less like a cohesive movie and more like a kid smashing action figures together. Granted, since this is based on a King short story, it is only fair to concede that the filmmakers were naturally confined to the boundaries of the original source material (and for that reason, Stephen King adaptations usually aren't my thing to begin with). But the bizarre structural choices extend heavily to the cast as well, making the whole production feel even more disjointed. The marketing heavily features Adam Scott, yet his actual involvement is limited to a brief, frantic pre-credit appearance before his character exits the narrative entirely, leaving you asking why a recognizable name was brought in for what amounts to a glorified cameo. Ultimately, when a horror-comedy fails to land its jokes and strips away all its suspense, it becomes a flat exercise in empty chaos that mostly left me feeling entirely indifferent by the time the credits rolled.
- Paul Walsh2026年3月3日Osgood Perkins may be the most prolific mainstream horror movie director at the moment. The man just keeps cranking out films. This one is a quirky, violent cursed item horror movie that does not take itself very seriously. A breezy watch with some interesting kills. Elijah Wood's brief appearance is hilarious.
- LivewireAdmin2026年2月3日Surprisingly decent? I was underwhelmed by Longlegs so I went into The Monkey with low expectations and it was for the better. Perkins seems to be able to juggle horror and comedy better than he does just straight horror. I don't believe I have seen Theo James in anything else before but he was excellent in this. Tatiana Maslany as well.
- Jakeys2026年1月3日I'm a harsh critic on horror, but it looks like I'm not alone in thinking this was average. Funny though, thankfully. Didn't think much of the acting either. The only genuinely great moment in this movie was the woman inexplicably exploding on impact in the electrified pool. That really caught me off guard in a fantastic and memorable way. The movie at least didn't take itself seriously, because if it did I think it would have been genuinely bad. As it stands, it was okay.
- DJ2025年2月22日Big horror buff, just see my activity, and I appreciate all forms of horror. Funny, sad, violent, mind games, splatter etc. etc. and I really wanted to love this as a popcorn splatterfest but it fell short of even my lukewarm expectations. The kills were fun but rushed. The dark comedy for whatever reason just didn’t seem to fit the film. I also love most of Osgood Perkins work (Blackcoat and Long Legs). Just fell short. Do I recommend it as a couch watch? Sure, but don’t expect much. Premise, a cursed toy monkey kills randomly every-time you turn the crank on it. Pretty simple.
- marshalsea2025年4月22日Anyone reviewing this low doesn't have the right sense of humour. They've also completely missed out on an outrageous time. This was an absolute riot, perfectly pitched, acted, directed - camp in a proper 80s b-movie way, gory in a proper 80s b-movie way, over the top in a proper 80s b-movie way. If Andy Scott with an outrageous moustache laughing maniacally with a flame thrower didn't set this up you're the problem. Os Perkins hits it out the park again in a very different way. Looking forward to his next one.
