I did not like this movie nearly as much as the first one when I saw it in theaters. Now, after learning a lot about the entire Ju-On/Grudge franchise and watching them all, I appreciate it more. Kayako's backstory is where it loses me though. Feels like a crappy "studio exec" choice.

I’ve never understood why this film is so polarising, for everyone like me that absolutely LOVES this film, there’s somebody else that hates it. Strangely I’ve never actually met anybody in real life that doesn’t like it but the negative reviews online suggests there’s definitely a portion of people out there that dislike it, though I suspect it’s just a very vocal minority. Personally I think this movie did absolutely EVERYTHING spectacularly. First the visual horrors in this are terrifying, beautifully dark from an aesthetically standpoint. Some of the visual cinematography is just so scary & perfect. If you’ve seen it you know what I mean: • The opening schoolgirls at house scene • The milk scene • The Japanese love hotel sequence • The hospital death • The photo darkroom scene • The principal’s office • The locker room • The final hoodie reveal & so much more. These scenes are so iconic & burned into my brain, so many horror movies since have tried to replicate these exact scenes (particularly the darkroom scene). There’s a general aesthetic to this movie that’s both disturbing & strangely breathtaking. Secondly I love the the storytelling structure it uses a fractured, interwoven timeline very reminiscent of Pulp Fiction in its style of nonlinear storytelling following multiple connected storylines: • Aubrey, Karen & Eason • 3 schoolgirls (Alison, Miyuki & Vanessa) • The family (Jake, Lacey, Trish & Bill) At first, these stories seem separate, but they’re all tied together through the Ju-on curse. I love when films experiment with structure like this instead of following a straightforward A-to-B formula. The fragmented timeline adds confusion in a good way. Thirdly, this will resonate mostly with male viewers but literally almost every single female in this movie is hot. Not just hot but like, MAJOR hot. Supermodel hot. Miyuki (Misako Uno) is so damn cute & sexy, Vanessa (Teresa Palmer) is hot af too despite having ugly feet (must be a body double bc ew), Trish (Jennifer Beals) is a mf MILF despite being born in the 60s has just as much sex appeal as she did in the 80s & 90s, Sally (Jenna Dewan) has some of the nicest legs ever & even turned me on doing that gross milk puke scene, Lacey (Sarah Roemer) was girl next door cute as hell & had a sweet personality, even Karen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) in her brief scenes looking disheveled was a baddie. If you’re a red blooded male it’s almost impossible not to get bricked up watching this movie. Miyuki is my fav though. I’m not going to bother explaining the story/plot, it would be a lot to explain to somebody unfamiliar with the first remake this follows or its original Japanese trilogy that it’s based on, but I suspect everybody knows of this franchise, basically a malevolent supernatural demonic curse, evil demon woman & slightly less aggressive but still evil demon male child sidekick, characters encounter the curse & then scary visuals & jumpscares as characters picked off, reveal that makes you sympathise with demon people, more characters die, the end. This film is a straight up 10/10 in my eyes, I wanted to give it a 9 to seem more critical but honestly it gets bumped up to a 10/10 (Masterpiece / Top tier / Instant favorite) because nostalgia as I loved this movie a kid, although no kid should see this I did & it was one of the few DVDs I had so I would watch this as I went to sleep for background noise/nightlight & honestly this movie was probably responsible for a ton of nightmares as a child. It’s dark, stylish, structurally ambitious & packed with unforgettable horror imagery. Underrated then. Underrated now.

Aside from some pretty solid performances, The Grudge 2 has little to offer in terms of story or follow-through. Just when I think it will finally explain itself and justify its existence, it gives me the bird.
