Thoughtlessly picking up a curiously woven basket, a party of sightseers at a pleasure park ask the old Indian curio vendor the meaning of its design. He tells the following story, "Long ago, there lived a beautiful Indian maiden, the daughter of a mighty chieftain. Among her many suitors there was one whom she loved above all others. He was but a common brave. Another had been chosen by her father; a warrior whom she did not love. The maiden would have none of him and clandestinely met her lover. One day, however, her father found them together. His wrath knew no bounds and he outlawed the youth from the tribe, and her loved one wandered away. Prostrated with grief, the maiden sought out the tribal medicine man and told him her story. Following his advice, she steeped some poisonous weeds and drank the extract, hoping thereby to realize her fondest hopes, fell dead. While this occurred, the two rivals met in deadly combat. One of the two, mortally wounded, fell into the rapids, and a water grave. The other, from a knife thrust, reeled fatally wounded to the ground. As evening came on the old chieftain, returning to his home, came upon the young brave's body. Overpowered with anguish he knew that this death was because of him. When he reached his tent he found his daughter stark and cold on her bed. Unable to restrain his grief, he fell prone upon the ground, for he saw too clearly the havoc his will had wrought." And then the Ballyhoo added, "I was too severe with my own child, but she is now in the happy hunting ground with the love 1 had denied her while she lived."
