Suspiria is a striking piece of stylised horror where atmosphere and visual design dominate everything else. The film’s use of color, lighting, and set design creates a dense, almost surreal environment that feels more like a controlled nightmare than a traditional narrative. While the underlying plot is relatively direct, the way the story is presented is fragmented and dreamlike, with minimal exposition and a strong reliance on mood, imagery, and sound to communicate meaning. This makes the experience feel more complex and disorienting than a straightforward “simple script” would suggest. Even when narrative clarity is reduced, the film remains coherent on a sensory and emotional level. Overall, it stands as one of Argento’s strongest works, precisely because it prioritises cinematic experience over conventional storytelling. The result is less about following the plot and more about being absorbed into its unsettling, highly stylized world.
- Garrett Wilkins2026年6月7日Nearly fifty years after its release, Suspiria remains one of the most frequently recommended horror films for anyone looking to explore the genre's history, which is ultimately what brought me to it. Jessica Harper delivers a strong lead performance and provides a welcome anchor as the film descends further into its increasingly strange and unsettling world. The vivid colors and iconic score create an atmosphere unlike almost anything else from its era, and there are moments where the film feels more interested in creating a nightmare than telling a conventional story. That approach is also where my biggest frustrations came from. I spent much of the runtime confused, and while I understand that dreamlike ambiguity is part of the film's appeal, it often left me feeling detached rather than intrigued. There were also moments where the film's age became difficult to ignore, particularly in sequences where the artificial nature of the sets was obvious through a modern lens. None of this ruined the experience, but it did prevent me from becoming fully immersed in the nightmare the film was trying to create. I have no problem accepting Suspiria as a horror classic, but I never found it to be a timeless one. More than anything, I came away respecting its influence and artistry more than I actually enjoyed watching it.
- cultfilmliker2025年7月24日Sssplendid 🐍 The first film I watched on my new QLED 4K tv. Phenomenal choice. The juxtaposition of beauty and horror is 👌🏻 *chef’s kiss* Goddamn this score is so good. An all-timer imo. I get this gooey feeling inside when the drum (timpani? didgeridoo??) kicks in. Like butterflies but a warm, congealed glow. It’s like the record from The Lords of Salem. The guitar riffs are so sick too 🤘🏼 And some of the most vibrant colors in cinema!! The set designs are mind blowing.
- James Robinson2026年2月4日Incredible ambience and use of vivid colors and light/shadow, and sound which remains a unique and unrivaled calling card of Dario’s directorial skills and is done better than most cinema today. Set design is incredible, eeriness is palpable and the movie, while slightly dated, still holds impressive relevance today.
- Randy Lowe2025年2月4日beautiful to look at. pretty great music (blaring through every scene). but horrible acting, directing, and an over-the-top campy, B-movie script/dialogue. but, good clean fun. a super young, and un-credited, Udu Kier appears (speaking English)...and they dub over him with a ridiculously 'all-American' voice. Hilarious.
- James Saenz2025年11月2日“quandum ubique, quandum semper, quandum ad omnibus creditur est.” i had zero clue films were allowed to look this visually stunning. i don’t think i’ve ever seen a prettier movie; nearly ever scene was followed by another, more breathtaking scene and i just kept saying “jesus CHRIST” to myself over and over throughout the runtime in an increasingly incredulous tone. the atmosphere is absolutely delectable, sonically and visually. the soundtrack felt so eerie and oftentimes left me feeling uncomfortable. i’m so happy i chose this as my final film of the spooky season on halloween night; i need to see this both on the silver screen and in the italian dub expeditiously. p.s. it’s so funny to me that the english dub has nonsensical latin while apparently the italian dub is accurate, like we just couldn’t be bothered to make sure we said the same and correct thing in both dubbings.
