Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti must have had an absolute blast making this, because the movie plays like everybody understood the assignment: do not aim for realism, aim for maximum chaos. It is pure cartoon violence, full of John Woo DNA, obvious Hard Boiled worship, and enough bullet-ballet nonsense to make Chow Yun-fat nod politely and then call his lawyer. Roger Ebert loved that exact quality, calling it “audacious, implausible, cheerfully offensive, hyperactive,” while the broader critical consensus landed closer to “ridiculous, but undeniably fun.” That is also why it reminded me of playing Duke Nukem in God mode: one man against what feels like several hundred idiots, somehow never running out of bullets, momentum, or carrots. Yes, I got the Bugs Bunny joke immediately, and the movie is smart enough to know that the carrot is not a subtle symbol, it is a giant neon sign saying “this is live-action Looney Tunes for adults.” The famous shootout-sex scene with Monica Bellucci is so outrageously over the top that it almost deserves its own behind-the-scenes documentary, if only to explain how many takes it took before everyone involved started laughing. That said, it is still basically empty calories. The CGI looks dated now, the plot is barely more than an excuse to reload the next absurd set piece, and once the adrenaline wears off there is not much left except the memory of Giamatti snarling and Owen looking cool with produce. Even some mixed-to-positive reviews admitted it is mostly gunfights strung together and runs on style more than substance. So yes, it is fun. It is also the kind of movie you watch, enjoy, and then misplace in your brain a week later.
- ርልዪረ2025年1月31日┌( ͝° ͜ʖ͡°)=ε/̵͇̿̿/’̿’̿ ̿ You can easily see why the critics had such a hard time reviewing this film... The action is so over the top. But then this is EXACTLY why I wanted to purchase and watch this very film. The action is the best thing about it, as promised. This film will never be Jane Austen, it will never be Aliens... It is itself, a wry, knowing, tongue-in-cheek , non-stop-romp through the the ways to shoot and be shot, with, of course, a little humour. The plot works as a vehicle with which to hang the action on... What more do you want ? If I can watch Arnie, Sly and Segal batter people and blow them up with little acting skill yet become natural-born-artists when in a dodgy situation that involves killing and or lots of guns. The modern production values and camera angles provide a great deal of amusement and the idea that we enjoy not only the shooting but the choreographed nature of the killing brings great pleasure... If the final battles in Kill Bill bore you through repetetiveness then that does not happen here. Each killing zone is perfectly planned and different from the last; and also perfect in its method of killing. So to sum up... ever get the feeling hollywood films had lost the plot on violence ? Well here's the antidote..... Just sit back, watch and enjoy some of the crazyiest and most enjoyable shooting scenes ever committed to celluloid
- alihoneycutt2026年4月27日The fight scenes were unrealistic (they ripped off John Wick). The special effects were "You gotta be shittin me" level (an abacus made in Nigeria could do better). The story line was strange. The leading lady was WAY past her prime. My estimation of this movie is... ENTERTAINING! The filmmakers know what kind of film they made, and they tell you from the beginning. They don't try to fool you. This is a good bad movie! 3 stars.
- Doc Worm2026年1月18日Dated in its ignorant script, lackluster CGI and mid aughts soundtrack it all somehow serves to enhance the pure lunacy on display in Shoot em up. The comparisons to looney tunes is apt given how perfect a foil Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti are to each other. Phenomenal over the top action throughout. 🥕
