監督:Steven Spielberg「史上最大の作戦」ノルマンディー上陸作戦。掩蔽壕の機関銃座から猛烈な銃撃を受けながらもオマハ・ビーチ上陸作戦を生き残った米軍第5軍第2レンジャー大隊C中隊隊長のミラー大尉（トム・ハンクス）の下に、米第7軍第101空挺師団第506パラシュート歩兵連隊第1大隊B中隊に所属するジェームス・ライアン2等兵（マット・デイモン）をノルマンディー戦線から探し出し無事帰国させよ、という任務が下った。ライアン家の4人兄弟はジェームス以外の3人の兄弟が戦死し、彼が唯一の生存者であった。息子たちの帰国を本国で待つ母親に息子全員の戦死の報せが届くのはあまりに残酷だ。たった一人だけでも生かし、母親の下に息子を返してやりたいという軍上層部の配慮だった。ミラーは兵士一人を救出するために部下の命を危険にさらす任務に乗り気ではなかったが、危険極まりない敵陣深く進入し、ジェームス・ライアンを救出するための捜索を始める。

Still, the men we follow in the film’s Second Ranger Battalion may be fictitious, but the Second Ranger Battalion itself was a very real part of D-Day. Spielberg is building many of his narratives around American heroes and documenting our history in ways that can’t be gleaned from a textbook.

- Kevin Ward2025年7月6日The storming of Omaha beach sequence is simply one of the greatest technical achievements in film. Kaminski’s cinematography combined with immersive sound design result in an absolutely visceral viewing experience. I remember watching this in the theater on opening weekend and being completely out of breath once those first 25 or 30 minutes are up. It had been quite a while since I’d actually watched this, but it definitely still holds up. I would love to see Spielberg tackle something like this again.
