Sixteen-year-old Bee is living in a town she can barely stand with a mother that believes the world is facing impending doom. When Griffin, her boyfriend, tells her he has been offered a bonus to join the army early, Bee, terrified of being left behind, proposes on the spot. The young couple quickly break the news to Janet, Bee's mother, but she refuses to give her consent which is required for a minor to be married in Maryland. Undeterred, later that evening Bee hatches a plan to obtain permission by tracking down her father who abandoned her years ago, but is still her legal guardian. Soon, Bee and her wayward sister Sarah are off to Maine in an old Grand Marquis. The close quarters serve to bring the sisters together as they share the hardships and disappointments life has brought their way. The road trip finds them laughing, crying and appreciating how fortunate they are to have each other, all while Janet checks in regularly from the farm, courtesy of army grade walk talkies. An overnight stay at their aunt's house goes awry and a run in with skin heads takes an unexpected twist. Before long, with their hearts beating heavily the girls arrive at their final destination to ask for the signature of a man they hardly know.
