A tax audit takes place in the office of lawyer Joachim Vernau. For some unknown reason, the tax official Harry Fischer is interested in a four-year-old entertainment receipt. He therefore forces Vernau to come to the office in the middle of the night. When Vernau arrives, the tax inspector is dead - shot. What is so special about this hospitality voucher? At the time, Vernau was having dinner in an expensive restaurant with one of his oldest friends, the Ku'damm advocate Sebastian Marquardt. But Marquardt can't or won't help him. For he has other worries: his marriage to his wife Brigitte is in shambles, he is in debt and has a new mistress, Tatjana Wolgast, who is also a co-worker. Vernau is also actually busy with other things: His mother Hildegard and her friend Hüthchen have become victims of a real estate shark, and he is representing them in an eviction suit in court. Then Sebastian Marquardt suddenly disappears off the face of the earth. Vernau and his colleague Marie-Luise Hoffmann investigate and find out that on the day the hospitality voucher was issued, a Berlin public prosecutor committed suicide. Is there a connection? And they discover that the now dead tax official was obviously on the trail of corruption cases and crooked deals in Berlin's real estate industry. The investigations do not go unnoticed. Vernau gets involved with the shady Adil Kalaman and his life is in danger.
