⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Uplifting, Inspiring, and Brilliantly Acted! I Swear is a beautifully uplifting and deeply inspiring story that will stay with you long after it ends. Robert Aramayo and Maxine Peake deliver absolutely brilliant, top-tier performances, bringing incredible emotional depth and heart to the screen. It is an absolute joy to watch and an easy 5 stars from me! (Though I have to admit, Moaning Mertel will always be typecast 😂

One if not the best ‘biopics’ I have seen. The movie is moving, emotional and funny. Would watch again!

TL;DR The plot was good but the humor was grating and callous. And it was cheesy lol SO glad I didn’t go see this in theaters bc I wouldn’t have been able to understand SHIT I have had All-4-One’s “I Swear” stuck in my head for months bc of this film It would open with the one New Order song I like Shirley Henderson so adorable You gotta carry a rock you Oslo, August 31st knockoff I did love the Portishead needledrop. Was listening to it on my walk last night lol The inclusivity and teaching was nice I can’t lie I don’t understand people that don’t understand Tourette’s / mental illness so I don’t feel the film was as important as everyone is making it to be I also don’t find the tics “funny” or anything it just feels ableist. I think I laughed once during their unceasing attempts at humor I wonder if there’s a group of people with Tourette’s that hate the people who are attempting to treat it instead of just accepting it, like in the deaf community Currently Ranked #39/61 in 2026 Ranked

Why the hell was this labeled as a comedy first. Sure there were funny parts, but this really wasn't deserving if the label.

I Swear shines a spotlight on Tourette Syndrome, something I feel that I personally had not been exposed to or taught about at all. In that way, this movie felt unique compared to others in the genre that also focus on a character dealing with a disability. I actually felt like I was learning about it, not just from the perspective of a character who is struggling with it but also from the perspective of understanding those who have it. I truly believe that I would have been like one of the many characters in this movie who was offended by Davidson had I not watched it. In that way, the movie actually feels like the truest form of advocacy, and I really appreciate the fact that Kirk Jones decided to focus on this topic. Robert Aramayo does a fantastic job, not because of his physicality in capturing the tics but rather because of how he is able to really showcase the interiority of John Davidson, his emotional state, that is not always in line with the words and expressions that are being showcased. His body movements, voice, and eyes are sometimes all working in completely different directions, and his performance is really impressive when you think about that. With that said, I don't think this movie is perfect. I always look at movies like this and ask if they manage to do something more than just selecting an important topic. With this movie, I sometimes was left wondering if the actual filmmaking itself elevated the movie beyond its subject matter or central performance. The camerawork and directing is just in the background, often not doing much. I think that can be fine, but it also makes the movie feel less memorable. I do think the movie does a good job in building the emotional relationships between John and Dottie and Tommy, showcasing the impact of kindness. That aspect led to some heartfelt scenes that I do think made an impression. I just wish we got more into why John becomes the man he is at the end of the movie in terms of him discovering his true purpose. I feel the movie rushed that revelation a bit. Overall, I think this movie is an important watch, grounded by a strong performance. I just think it doesn't necessarily go beyond that though.
