It’s gorgeous—every frame dripping with moody lighting, smoky taverns, and forests that practically whisper “festival award nominee”—and the practical effects are so charmingly old-school you half expect Guillermo del Toro to pop out and take a bow. The actors commit fully, the devil is more entertaining than terrifying, and the adorable kids could probably defeat evil with the power of aggressive wholesomeness alone. Unfortunately, after building such a rich, fairy-tale world full of likable characters and grim promise, the story kind of shrugs its shoulders at the finish line and settles for “meh, good enough.” It’s less a horror film and more a beautifully shot bedtime story told by someone who forgot the ending but hoped you’d be too enchanted to notice.

While you might think this would be sufficient, you lose a lot of the story because you’re waiting for the subtitles to explain what’s going on. By the time the subtitles start the conversation is over, and new action obscures the subtitles meaning…altogether frustrating!!
