Taylor, Harrison, and Burton are all quite good, as well as Martin Landau and Roddy McDowell. The first half is better than the second, but there are still great moments throughout.

So bloated was its budget that it's considered a financial flop, even though it was the highest grossing movie of 1963. Its critical reception was equally brutal, and it's never really recovered. But don't believe the hype: Cleopatra is an extremely entertaining film, even at four hours long. Don't expect a serious history lesson: This is a great big candy-colored confection of a movie, never less than glorious to look at, and with more sex than your average OnlyFans site. Elizabeth Taylor's unrivaled star power and voracious ego may have been the driving force behind getting this film made, but it's more than just Liz's show. Richard Burton is spectacular, Rex Harrison makes a fine Julius Caesar, and Roddy McDowell even gets to flex his muscles as Octavian. Quite a show.

There was clearly a fortune spent on this and yet it never felt.. Epic. The cinematography and colouring were spectacular. i grew up with the puffy, bloated, over painted Taylor; but in this she looked very beautiful.

It’s not without it’s own faults of course but considering just the grand scale of this project alone during it’s time, everything from props to makeup, production and etc… is all just over the top. Definitely worth the 4+ hrs for anyone looking for a decent Cleopatra or ancient Rome/Egypt western interpretations I’d event go as far as to say that this is a must watch considering the lack lustre bore films we get now days unfortunately. Hollywood just don’t make em like this anymore period. Go and watch it and make your own decision on whether or not this is in fact one of the best (if not, the best) Cleopatra movies of all time. It sure was for me that’s for sure. Everything from the script, behind the screen contents and even Liz’s visible tracheotomy scar fired so many questions of mine that simply just needed to be answered or explained further since this was all way before my time.
