カリフォルニア州の砂漠地帯にある刑務所から受刑者が脱獄する。受刑者の名はアルバート・ギャンズ、強盗殺人の前科がある危険な男だ。ギャンズは共犯者ビリー・ベアと共にサンフランシスコに逃亡する。
次の日、サンフランシスコ市警察本部のジャック・ケイツ部長刑事は、同僚の刑事2人と共に非行少年が潜伏しているホテルに踏み込む。ところが、そこにいたのは非行少年ではなく、ギャンズたちであった。激しい銃撃戦となり、刑事2人は射殺されてしまう。
ケイツは、ギャンズのかつての仲間であり現在は服役中のレジー・ハモンドというチンピラから手掛かりを引き出そうとする。「ギャンズを捕まえるために自分を刑務所から出して協力させろ」と要求するハモンドに対して、48時間の期限付き仮出所を取り付けたケイツ。ハモンドは仮出所できた解放感からか、女を口説くなど軽薄な行動をするが、その度にケイツを苛立たせる。

- Zokkiie2025年12月23日Such a blast! Nick Nolte and Eddie Murphy make a great team—Nolte's the no-nonsense cop, and Murphy's the smart-mouthed convict, and their back-and-forth is awesome. The plot’s simple, but the chemistry between the two really makes it fun to watch. The action’s solid, though it does slow down a bit here and there. Overall, it’s a great mix of humor and action from the '80s. Definitely worth checking out if you like buddy cop movies
