While pursuing a car speeding through Paris at top speed, police officer Marie Lamare (Henriette Richter-Röhl) is hit by an unknown gunman's bullet in a shootout and loses consciousness. A young archaeology professor named Paul Racine (Johannes Zirner) witnesses the shooting and administers first aid to the injured and unconscious Marie at the scene. Soon after, the two meet again in Brittany, where the police officer, on leave from duty, is trying to come to terms with what has happened. When Paul unexpectedly stumbles upon a secret, it changes Marie's life too – and that of her father Michel (Ulrich Pleitgen), whom she meets for the first time after her accident. But he seems just as strange to her as her supposed godfather Leon Menec (Hans Zischler) and his wife Claire (Katja Weitzenböck).
