While as a stand alone this if possibly better than my rating however, I made the decision to watch Rome, Medici & The Borgias chronologically. Of those this one I consider the weaker although it is close between this and Medici. Cast is strong, wardrobe appears to be fairly accurate, sets are fairly well represented, score is good. As to accuracy all 3 favour drama over fact which is always the case. I noticed in all 3 shows that the poor areas have a tendancy to look cleaner and tidier than it would of been. Sean Harris playing the unsung hero Micheletto plays one of the strongest supporting characters. Direction changes for season 3 as this duty is taken over by Kari Skogland rather than Neil Jordan, who wrote all 3 seasons but only directed the first 2. I found this final season a bit more on the sensational side.

The Borgias dramatizes the infamous Renaissance family whose grip on the Catholic Church was marked by corruption, ambition, and scandal. Showtime’s series attempts to capture this turbulent history, blending political intrigue with personal betrayals. Jeremy Irons is perfectly cast as Rodrigo Borgia, later Pope Alexander VI, bringing gravitas and menace to the patriarch’s role. The production values are strong, with lavish costumes and atmospheric settings that immerse viewers in the decadence of 15th-century Rome. While the show succeeds in portraying the family’s hunger for power and influence, it struggles to fully convey the shocking excesses of the real story. The historical reality is difficult to stomach, and the adaptation often softens or streamlines events for dramatic effect. Still, The Borgias remains a compelling series, offering a mix of drama and history that entertains even if it doesn’t entirely capture the full weight of its source material.
