In each episode of this German animated series, one of the famous Classical fairy tales of the brothers Grimm is told in the magical land of Simsala. The local characters Doc Croc and Yoyo move between the story-teller and the episode cast, which they tend to help or at least inspire.

E1Jack e il fagiolo magicoThe story follows a young boy named Jack who lives with his widowed mother. They are very poor, and their only source of income is a cow that stops giving milk. Jack's mother sends him to sell the cow, but instead, Jack trades it for a handful of magic beans. His mother is furious and throws the beans out the window. Overnight, the beans grow into a massive beanstalk that reaches up into the clouds. Jack climbs the beanstalk and discovers a giant's castle in the sky. Inside the castle, he finds treasures, including a hen that lays golden eggs, a magical harp, and bags of gold coins. Jack steals these items, escaping each time from the giant who lives there. On his final trip, the giant chases Jack down the beanstalk. Jack quickly cuts down the beanstalk, causing the giant to fall to his death. The clever hedgehog devises a plan with his wife, who looks very similar to him. They position themselves at the start and finish lines of the race. As the race begins, the hare sprints ahead, only to find the hedgehog's wife waiting at the finish line, giving the impression that the hedgehog has beaten him. The hare, baffled and humiliated, challenges the hedgehog again and again, with the same outcome each time. The hardworking sister falls into a well and finds herself in the realm of Mother Hulda, a kind old woman who controls the weather. When she returns home, her sister, envious of the reward, deliberately jumps into the well to seek the same fortune. However, due to her laziness and bad attitude, she is punished with a shower of pitch instead of gold.
