A comedy about a mother at a milestone in her life. We follow her and her family through a year of new beginnings as she rebuilds her life following the death of her husband. Mum is joined by her supportive life-long friend Michael. Through a year of new beginnings she rebuilds her life surrounded by her family: son Jason and his girlfriend Kelly; her brother Derek and his new partner, Pauline; and her in-laws.

E2AprilOn Easter Sunday Cathy and Michael aim to clear the sitting room to make way for a new carpet but are hampered when Kelly and Jason volunteer to do it instead, believing that Michael is wrong for Cathy. Cathy's old friend Lyn pays a visit, making Pauline jealous, but Cathy decides to press ahead with her original plan, regardless of them all. - June
E3JuneCathy has a barbecue where she asks Michael why he did not reply to her email suggesting they spent a day at a garden centre and is surprised by his reason. The in-laws criticize everything from the dips to Derek and his children, notably weird Danielle who has arrived with her parents. Kelly can talk of nothing but her new flat whilst an accident with a deck chair prompts a visit to a garden centre after all. - July
E4JulyKelly is more irritating than usual so Cathy is pleased that she and Jason are going on holiday. Michael, who has just learned his mother has died, nonetheless volunteers to drive them to the airport whilst the in-laws grudgingly agree to take delivery of a new washing machine as Cathy has to go to work. Michael tries to declare his feelings to Cathy but she feels it is just the grief talking and does not give the answer he wants. - September
E5SeptemberCathy cooks for an unappreciative Reg whilst Maureen is in hospital for an operation and Michael donates his mother's kitchen utensils to Cathy, to Pauline's disdain. Cathy and Michael make trite small talk as he considers moving to Spain but, after hearing good news from the hospital, they get to share a hug. - November
E6NovemberOn Bonfire Night Cathy throws a party for the family and Michael - who has bought a flat in Spain The in-laws are still bickering and Pauline berating Derek for calling her a snob and for his past misdeeds but a comment from Jason regarding his father leads Cathy to declare her feelings for Michael in defiance of her controlling relatives.
