Adrian Monk è un detective del dipartimento di polizia di San Francisco. In seguito all'omicidio di sua moglie, ha vissuto per tre anni e mezzo in isolamento prima di tornare alla sua professione grazie all'infermiera Sharona Fleming, ma l'esperienza gli ha lasciato una profonda angoscia che si manifesta in molte fobie.
