The regular main characters are the judges (mainly the president), the public prosecutor (styled procureur-general, 'general procurator'), while the attorneys change with the defendant(s), the civil parties (who may also have lawyers of their own), and the witnesses, including police officers and onderzoeksrechter ('judge of instruction', a magistrate supervising the police investigation until the trial).
