It’s the template, the tone-setter, and the reason you now associate warm breezes and steel drums with cold-blooded murder. Across its many seasons, the show has seen a parade of inspectors, each bringing their own flavour to Saint Marie’s endless stream of improbable homicides. From the pragmatic and stoic to the bumbling and romantically inclined, every detective leaves a distinct mark on the island — and on the audience. Yet one thing binds them all: none of them wanted to be there in the first place… until they inevitably fall in love with Guadeloupe’s charm — and, of course, Harry the lizard. Tonally, it’s the perfect blend of comfort and crime, a sunny antidote to the usual grit of police dramas. Even with the occasional serious episode or emotional twist, the show remains resolutely upbeat — a reminder that murder mysteries don’t have to be miserable.
