Dallos isn't a series I hear about often outside of its historical significance. I came across it some years ago, and the poster showing a mass of graves on the surface of the moon never left my mind. I ended up liking it a lot more than I anticipated; the art style has an interesting blend of early anime shot full of adrenaline with some sumptuous action sequences and odd technology intermingling into a unique blend of early sci-fi. The second episode is Dallos at its strongest animation wise, with multiple dramatic scenes playing out like a morality play before the story thrusts into a bloodthirsty back and forth between the rebels and government. While the main theme of Dallos has a weighty dramatic orchestral flair, the rest of the soundtrack is set to a charmingly loose-fitting. Nothing like watching a dog rip someone's throat out to a funky synth pop beat! There was clearly more planned but troubled production ended Dallos before it could become whole. The titular Dallos and its mystery lays unresolved by the end, more questions than answers abound, and the air of uncertainty surrounds every surviving character. Still, I was left feeling satisfied in the end. That poster that lingered with me is finally given context, and the final speech from Shun resonated with me as he looked on to cause of all this death. I think its fair to predict that Dallos is not for everyone due to its antiquity and fundamentally unfinished nature. I'm no stranger to feeling like incomplete works aren't even worth starting, but Dallos still managed to effect me. There are some scenes, some moments of brilliance sprinkled throughout that have stuck in my mind. Maybe they will stick in yours, too. I still wish we figured out what the whole point of Dallos was though; it's the name of the damn show!! It's a short watch, in all. Worth a look to those interested coming in with the right expectations.
