In the modern era this show feels different because it steeps itself in the language of classic television. It has spectacle but not gratuitously, instead choosing to serve the settings, dialogue and performances with heightened poignancy and only where required. It was broadcast to a weekly schedule with 5 tight episodes that were all written and directed by the same two people; someone wanted to tell a story and they were allowed to. The co-production seems to have taken the best of both worlds by combining the money and polish of American television with the discipline and intimacy of British television. And then there's the subject matter. What really does go on in the small rooms of these foreign lands or your own land even that profoundly effects the lives and deaths of thousands. The unclean nature of everything will have you practically questioning your own health as you watch the nightmare unfurl. It's brilliant, it's not disposable and it will not age and in case you didn't know by now it's highly recommended.

This event has been held in mystery for almost 40 years. While I am unsure how much of it is accurate, the sentiment feels right and they do a great job of being upfront about who people are and represent. There is also some clarification about the events that took place and what they changed to fit TV. The cast was amazing. I am flabergasted by how well they stand up and take action. Jared Harris and Stellan Skarsgård are incredible to watch. They do a great job of playing the lofty scientist and the USSR bureaucrat. The way they acknowledge what is going on with the surveillance state all while trying to save the world really. What I find most interesting is the level of chaos this caused. I knew it was bad, but I don't think I realized how bad it was, and more importantly, could have been. I understand why people are concerned about nuclear power, but I think this show does a great job of explaining the differences between the USSR/Russian facilities and ones in the west. Not being cheap. ## [My Rating] This was an incredible show. I remember watching the first couple of episodes years ago and then something happened and someone... finished it without me. So I just never finished it. Now, I am glad that I watched it again because that might be the best performance I've seen in the TV show all year. The pacing was a little rough at times, but if you hold on it is worth the watch. A solid 9. ## [Parental Rating] There is an abundance of language. And a lot of "hanging brain" in one specific episode. There is also some very grotesque bodily damage. As it should be. Much like how I wanted [[Oppenheimer]] to do, but I understand why it didn't. As much as I think they should watch it, they probably won't. Rejected by both.

HBO is renowned for high-quality productions, and this deep dive into the 1986 disaster is a perfect example of their craft. While I recently watched Radioactive Emergency on Netflix and found it to be a solid series on a similar theme It’s hard to beat Chernobyl it really set the gold standard for how to handle a real-life tragedy on screen. If you haven't seen it yet, you're missing out!
