Man, I miss the 2000s big budget historical epics. This movie is great. It has aged phenomenally, too.

Though it deviates from the Illiad, its still a great movie with a great cast.

As someone who's curiosity around Greek mythology is deep, I thoroughly enjoyed Troy. While I wouldn't call myself a scholar on all the ancient stories, I am well aware that this film deviates heavily from the original myths and is packed with historical inaccuracies. However, if you can look past that, it is actually a pretty damn good watch. The filmmakers managed to compress a massive, sprawling legend into a solid three plus hours of incredibly well told storytelling. Purely in terms of epic, big-screen entertainment, it absolutely delivers.

They don't make sword and sandal flicks like this anymore. TROY is beautifully shot, and Petersen's more realistic take on this legendary war epic is a sight to behold. There are no subtextual conversations from the POV of Zeus, Hera, or any of the other various Gods of Olympus. The film is from the POV of the mortals who loved, fought, and died in Homer's epic, and in doing so - Petersen grounds the film in a world that feels "real". Brad Pitt seems like he was born to play Achilles, as was Eric Bana playing Hector. Orlando Bloom, fresh off of Lord of the Rings, portrays a splendid Paris, and Brian Cox as Agamemnon was a brilliant choice. Peter O'Toole as Priam couldn't have been better, and Brendan Gleeson, Diane Kruger, and Rose Byrne all bring their A-game. If I had any complaint, it's that I would have loved to have seen Sean Bean as Odysseus in a follow-up in The Odyssey, but that ship has long sailed to Ithaca. On that note, I am very much looking forward to what Christopher Nolan does with The Odyssey (hoping he keeps the mythological/supernatural elements). Overall, TROY is underappreciated and a fantastic piece of film history. Highly recommended!

An Epic Film of a legendary tale. Well done. In over three hours I only saw three tiny errors. Two were Hectors rubber armor flexing as he donned it and lastly the harness showing when a Trojan is hung out a window. Brief minor glitches. The rest of the film is top notch. It loses it's luster after you watch it three or so times, but none the less, this holds up fine when compared to other Epics like Ben-Hur, The Ten Commandments, or Cleopatra and their ilk. Movies this good don't come along often. Watch it!

Incredible story based on the Iliad. Seeing those characters from the great story come to life is a wonderful ride

"The Gods envy us. They envy us because we're mortal, because any moment might be our last. Everything is more beautiful because we're doomed. You will never be lovelier than you are now."

Boy oh boy! A large-scale adaptation of Homer’s Iliad. And what a great movie this is! After Gladiator I'd rate this best sword and sandal -movie. Many great lines, super closeup shots, tight fight scene coreographs. Diane Kruger at peak hotness too as Helen. Even Sean Bean survives :D

One of my favorite Brad Pitt movies. I love the story line throughout the movie. It has Love, betrayal, war, and blood and gore. It tells the story we all heard so much about in high school. A once great city destroyed by politicians. And now, we repeat the cycle with todays politicians.

The acting is quite good even if the characters are all unlikable for various reasons. The visuals and action in the movie are also good.

If one ignores the Epic Cycle that inspires it, Troy is a serviceable action flick with some weird decisions and poor dialogue. When held up against the Iliad, the Aeneid, and the rest of the myths it is adapting, Troy is a disgrace--a Greek tragedy of epic proportions. Changes are made often and without cause, such as removing the gods from the story entirely, or heaping an entire HOUR onto the beginning of this (already too long) that adapts nothing from the original stories. You read that right--the first hour features literally nothing from the material being adapted. The film's attempt to make Achilles a complicated hero comes across as confused and noncommittal, and keeping him alive past the Trojan Horse escapade gives him little to do but run around and pretend he's had an arc. This is overshadowed by the attempts to make Paris heroic at all, or to make the abduction of Hellen romantic. The way characters bend over backwards to justify the slaughter of Troy for their affair is wild. The character of Menelaus, one of the few relatively innocent Greeks in the original story, is assassinated to this very end. The forced romance between Achilles and Briseis is equally off-putting. The action is great, generally speaking, and fun to watch. The allusions to the Aeneid and the handling of Patrocles are nice, changes and all. At the end of the day, though, I'd just say to read the book. I think dudes in particular will be surprised at how much they enjoy it.
