My quick rating - 8.6/10. To take a flick from 1951 "The Thing from Another Planet" which in its time and still a classic, and actually improve, drastically on it is a tall feat. But John Carpenter did just that with this 1982 piece of gold. The story is simple, an Arctic expedition team happens across an alien ship and inadvertently releases it. Of course you don't really know what the Thing is since it mimics the host. To say this movie is simple though would be an outright lie. This movie transcended an entire generation of movies to follow it. This took the creature creation to an entirely new level, and still stands up today even in the CGI created worlds. The characters were extremely well written and cast to near perfection. This is paramount in a story where the alien could be the person standing right next to you. It is not often you can go back to a movie 38 years later and it is still phenomenal. Heck, I wish I may be like one of you reading this and have never seen it, just so I could be lucky enough to see it again for the first time. It is that good. There have been thousands of write ups for this movie over the years, so I won't go too deep into this (back when I did write for a newspaper, I had to write a certain amount for my column, now, I think quick and to the point is far more effective). Quick ending. SEE THIS

This is an all time favorite for me. I would give it a perfect score, but i wish I had a sequel lol The remake was ok, but didn't compare to this one.

Incredible movie all around, such a shame that it never won any big awards - a Razzie nomination for the score is crazy!

Every film maker is trying to pull off magic but this team achived the impossible. Everybit of this film is a lesson for film students.

John Carpenter's The Thing is one of the best horror movies of all time. Hyperbole? Nope. It is a masterclass piece of cinema history that I place firmly on the same shelf as The Exorcist, Jaws, Rosemary's Baby and Psycho. From the pulsating score, the cinematography, the paranoia inducing script, the memorable and very human characters, and even the best dog actor ever put on screen (fight me) to Rob Bottins pneumonia induced fever dream that is the practical effects. The Thing is the sum of its parts. If this review actually convinces someone to watch it for the first time - please let me know. That would put a great big smile on my face.

Even if you are not a horror fan, this is a Must Watch. Any ‘Greatest Movies’ list has to consider this.

Pitting people against each other in a confined space makes for a solid thriller narrative, and this movie does a stellar job with it. John Carpenter's direction prowess is on full display, though sadly he left his synthesiser in his other pants here.

It’s certainly a very good film – a true classic, you might say. However, the VHS-style special effects are a relic of the past, more amusing than scary.
