Diretto da Sean PennL'ispettore di polizia Jerry Black è giunto al giorno della pensione. Arriva però la notizia del ritrovamento del cadavere straziato di una bambina e l'uomo si offre per l'avvio delle indagini. Queste hanno però breve durata, in quanto il presunto colpevole viene catturato e sembra "firmare" la propria confessione sottraendo una pistola a un poliziotto e sparandosi in bocca. Il caso è chiuso, ma Black non è convinto: ha promesso solennemente alla madre di prendere l'assassino.

Jack Nicholson gives an outstanding performance as Jerry Black, a retired Nevada police detective who has given a pledge to a mother, that he will find the killer of her little girl. This is one of these films that keeps you on the edge of your seat. An unpredictable ending but the killer gets his just desserts and will not kill again. Great entertainment and the third film that was directed by Sean Penn. Sean Penn's fourth film was ' Into The Wild ' - another terrific film. Very Highly Recommended film.
