It is an extremely conservative remake - a film that recreates the original almost beat for beat, adding only a contemporary, Hollywood polish that does not always work in its favor. The story itself remains solid, but its screen incarnation is weighed down by its own literalness. The casting of Damien’s parents is probably the film’s biggest misstep. What saves it are the supporting performances - Mia Farrow, David Thewlis, and Michael Gambon deliver compelling roles, reminding us that there is still real potential in this material. Ultimately, however, it is hard to shake the feeling that this Omen exists mainly to modernize the setting of the story, and that this is where its purpose ends. The remake not only adds nothing new, but along the way loses the original’s essential atmosphere: the image of a God-fearing America confronted with an incomprehensible, absolute evil lurking within an innocent child. The result is at best competent, but ultimately hollow.

Honestly, it’s not bad at all. It looks great, the atmosphere is consistently eerie, and a few death scenes are still pretty effective. The cast is solid, even if no one really elevates the material beyond what it is. It sticks very close to the original though, which makes the whole thing feel a little unnecessary at times. Still, it works as a decent remake for modern audiences or anyone who isn’t really into older horror movies. And seeing Mia Farrow pop up gave me a laugh — considering Rosemary's Baby, it feels like she took one look at the script and thought, “sure, I’ll help usher in the Antichrist again.” Weirdly fitting casting choice, and honestly one of the movie’s more fun little details.
