She is the adored one of her father, but her seeming wild and willful ways puzzles and distresses him. He consults the family physician who advises him to send her to a boarding school, suggesting this will tame her. Cicely immediately assumes leadership and is more or less concerned with all forms of original mischief. While she is away on probation her father grows so lonesome that he falls victim to the wiles of a designing widow and her daughter. When Cicely returns home she finds the pair in near possession of her father's home. She seemingly falls easily into their hands, but has her eyes open and plans quietly but effectively for their ejection. The scheming widow and her daughter have connived with an unscrupulous lawyer to take advantage of her desperately ill father to write a will in their favor and disinherit his daughter. How cleverly Cicely ousts them, outwits them and protects her own, makes an interesting and ingenious denouement, showing that she has fully awakened to the serious responsibilities of life.
