You really feel the victim's madness and it excuses any poor decision making. Really enjoyed it so it has held up well over the decades.

I didn’t know much going in back then, just that it was some kind of road thriller. But once Rutger Hauer shows up as John Ryder, it’s game over. He’s calm, creepy, and completely unpredictable. No backstory, no motive, just this quiet psycho who turns a simple ride into a nightmare. And the way he plays it? Chilling. He doesn’t shout, doesn’t rant,he just exists, like a force of nature. You can’t look away. Thomas Howell does fine as the kid caught in the mess, but let’s be honest, this is Hauer’s movie. Every time he’s on screen, the tension spikes. You never know what he’s going to do next, and that’s what makes it work. Forget the remake. This is the one. Rutger Hauer didn’t just play a villain, he became one of the most unnerving characters I’ve ever seen. No gimmicks, no flash, just pure menace.
