Il primo ufficiale di bordo Ray Sybert si rende conto di dover far fronte all’emergenza e superare una delle peggiori tempeste che si siano mai abbattute sull’East Coast. Nel frattempo, la notizia del disastro raggiunge la Guardia Costiera di Chatham, nel Massachusetts. Il Sergente Maggiore Daniel Cluff dà ordine di effettuare una rischiosa operazione per mettere in salvo i naufraghi: quattro uomini guidati dal Capitano Bernie Webber, si imbarcano su una scialuppa di salvataggio dal motore difettoso, quasi sprovvisti di reali mezzi di navigazione, contro onde di 18 metri, venti sferzanti e temperature glaciali.

It recalls the period when Walt Disney Productions regularly produced earnest live-action adventure films aimed at families, stories built around courage, decency, and competence rather than irony or spectacle. The film’s tone is straightforward and sincere, presenting bravery and duty without cynicism. That alone gives it a slightly old-fashioned appeal. Chris Pine does solid character work as the quiet, hesitant Coast Guard coxswain forced into leadership. His accent work is notably careful, and the performance leans into restraint rather than heroics. Holliday Grainger plays the romantic counterpart with a period-appropriate balance. She is outspoken and strong-willed, but the film keeps her grounded in the social limits of the 1950s. That choice avoids the common mistake of writing a modern character in period costume, and the result feels more authentic. The parallel storyline aboard the damaged tanker, led by Casey Affleck, is equally effective. The crew interactions feel lived-in, and the confined environment helps create a convincing sense of maritime procedure. Much of the film’s strength comes from this procedural focus. The rescue is treated as a technical and logistical challenge, and the tension grows from watching competent people attempt something extremely difficult rather than from artificial drama. Visually, the effects are strong precisely because they are restrained. The CGI supports the storm and the scale of the disaster without calling attention to itself. It integrates into the environment instead of dominating it, which helps preserve the film’s grounded tone. The score follows a similar approach, using traditional orchestral swells to underline heroism and danger without doing anything particularly distinctive. Character development is somewhat thin, but that feels partly intentional. The real centre of the film is the situation itself, the mechanics of the rescue from both perspectives. The narrative prioritizes process over personal arcs, which may limit emotional depth but strengthens immersion. In spirit, it recalls earlier Disney adventure films such as Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier, Treasure Island, or The Island at the Top of the World. Not in story, but in tone. Earnest, family-friendly adventure built around bravery, a moral imperative, and the belief that ordinary people can rise to extraordinary moments.
