When Stroud goes to a local bar to drown his sorrows, he runs into Janoth's mistress (Rita Johnson), who proposes that they blackmail Janoth, but things take an unexpectedly dark turn when one of them winds up murdered. Initially, The Big Clock was dismissed as too clever and too polished for a noir, but, in retrospect, its structural brilliance, biting cynicism, and relentless tension make it one of the smartest and most finely engineered film noirs ever made. What makes The Big Clock a masterpiece is its audacious narrative design: a man is ordered to investigate a murder, without realizing he himself is the prime suspect. As the net tightens, every clue points closer to him, turning the familiar noir theme of fate into something almost playful yet terrifying, solidifying The Big Clock as a quiet masterpiece hiding in plain sight.
- eif99924 gennaio 2025Oh I forgot how good this one is. Paramount noirs were very different than RKOs. They have a lighter touch and are overstuffed with actors, elaborate sets and interesting camera movements. I swear I can tell the difference between 40s RKO, WB, Paramount and Universal pictures films just by their look. Studios really did have a set way of making films with the director not contributing as much as you would have believed. Farrow does have to be praised if only because his wife O’Sullivan is in it and the camera loves her. A great suspense film that leans into the oversized New York characters that pepper the film. Elsa Lanchester and George Macready are great as always. But there’s also little Harry Morgan as a hitman. But this is Charles Laughton’s world and he’s the boss. So much fun.

All'interno di un grattacielo il tempo è scandito da un gigantesco orologio che simboleggia l'ossessione di Earl Janoth, potente magnate della stampa, per l'ordine e la puntualità. Durante un'animata discussione, Janoth uccide in un impeto di collera la propria amante Pauline York, e si rivolge al suo fedele aiutante Steve Hagen, che lo accompagna e lo consiglia in ogni frangente, affinché questi lo aiuti a depistare le indagini. George Stroud, stretto collaboratore di Janoth e giornalista di cronaca nera, si ritrova ad indagare proprio sull'omicidio di Pauline York, e deve constatare che i falsi indizi forniti da Hagen e Janoth portano direttamente a lui stesso. Stroud deve quindi tentare di salvarsi dall'ingranaggio costruito attorno a lui dalla diabolica coppia, dimostrando sia la propria innocenza che la colpevolezza di Janoth e la complicità di Hagen nell'uccisione di Pauline.
