Stuntman is an occasionally thrilling, sometimes frustrating tribute to the bruised bones and bravado of classic Hong Kong cinema. It centers on a washed-up stunt coordinator whose reckless pursuit of cinematic perfection once caused a devastating accident and sent him into early retirement. Decades later, when a former star he helped launch offers him a second chance, he steps back onto set—only to clash with modern crews who (rightly) prioritize safety over spectacle.
The film wears its nostalgia on its sleeve, with a fantastic, stylized opening that evokes the kind of balletic chaos Hong Kong action was known for. Posters of Hard Boiled and other iconic works are sprinkled throughout the film. As a tribute to that golden age, it works. As a character study... it’s trickier. Our protagonist is a hard sell. He neglects his daughter, bristles at safety protocols, and never quite seems to learn the right lessons. His arc is murky at best, and while the film gestures toward redemption, it doesn’t fully commit—leaving you unsure if he’s changed or just adapted.
Still, there’s a scrappy sincerity to the way Stuntman celebrates its craft. Like The Fall Guy did for Hollywood stunt performers, this is a love letter to a profession built on pain, precision, and the pursuit of impossible shots. If only its central character was as compelling as the legacy he’s so desperate to preserve.
