A Czech astronaut Jakub (Adam Sandler) goes on a solo mission to explore a mysterious purple cloud formation in the solar system. Almost midway through his journey his wife Lenka (Carey Mulligan) sends a transmission that she is leaving him. Worried for Jakub’s mental state in the lonely vacuum of space, the folks at mission control (Isabella Rosselini and Kunal Nayyar) withhold this information from him. But as Jakub’s loneliness and isolation takes hold and as he’s getting no responses to communications with his wife, he encounters and befriends a giant (CGI) spider voiced by Paul Dano. He names the spider Hanuš and begins contemplating his life with Lenka, ponders his regrets, and how he has let her down. The film reminded me very much of Solaris (that is Steven Soderberg’s 2002 — the only version I’ve seen) in that it is a galatially slow contemplativI sci-fi drama. When Jakub isn’t conversing with a (potentially) imaginary spider, we’re treated to ethereal flashbacks and memories with glossy wormhole camera filters. While I landed marginally on the positive side, this is not going to be for everyone. It is way too slow and really doesn’t leave the audience with much of any satisfying answers or closure. Additionally, my wife is reading the novel at the moment (She’s a little made at me for seeing this without her, but she was out of town for work). From what she has told me about the book, it feels like there’s a thematic layer that’s mostly missing from the on-screen version. I’ll be curious to hear what she thinks about this adaptation, of she still talks to me. Otherwise, I may have to ask my imaginary spider friend. Sandler would good, if a little one note, and Mulligan was entirely underutilized. Still, I enjoyed the watch. The Max Richter score is really well composed and the visuals looked nice on the big screen.

Damn, I'm not sure what I expected, but it certainly wasn't this level of emotional trauma. Sad fo reals yo.

Disappointed, was kinda just a failing love story

Was hyped for this, but unfortunately was pretty underwhelmed. It's weird in a good way, but the plot is very thin, revolving around the protagonist's mental state. The creature is the star of the film, but overall I think this would have worked better as a short film. I did like the ending, though.

I was expecting more. Idk why. I read the reviews and seen the description. Just didn’t expect it to leave me feeling wanting a different ending.
