Desperate to reclaim her career, an once-beloved actress is drawn into the glamorous world of a wellness mogul, only to uncover the monstrous truth beneath its flawless surface.
- Strong Idea, Weak Execution "Shell" has the misfortune of being a perfectly decent idea that arrived in the shadow of a better one. Body horror satire about the beauty industry and Hollywood's obsession with youth is rich territory, and the film knows it, but "The Substance" had already torn through that same ground with far more ferocity and commitment by the time this one landed. Comparisons are inevitable and rarely flattering. The two leads are the film's clearest asset. One of them knows exactly what kind of movie she's in and attacks it with a gleeful, campy energy that carries whole scenes on sheer force of personality. The other is more uneven, searching for a register that the film itself never quite settles on, which makes the central dynamic feel slightly mismatched in ways that work sometimes and jar at others. The tone is the real problem. "Shell" can't fully decide if it wants to be a sharp satire, a campy B-movie throwback, or a sincere horror film, and rather than blending those things into something interesting it just drifts between them without committing. The first half earns genuine goodwill, setting up the premise with enough dark humor and social observation to keep you curious, but the second half gradually loses grip as the film grows more indecisive precisely when it should be doubling down. Visually it's competent without being interesting, and the horror elements when they finally arrive feel restrained for a film that clearly needed to go further than it was willing to. There's a bolder, wilder version of "Shell" somewhere in the concept that this one keeps hinting at without ever quite becoming. What's left is watchable but unmemorable, a satire that makes its point too politely to really sting.
- Wasn't expecting Relic vibes in that final act so that was a nice surprise. Worth checking out for the crazy finale, but as whole it was just fine. Give this one a shot if you like the leading ladies, (they both deliver great performances) and some cool body horror but don't go in expecting The Substance level of quality this doesn't reach those heights. 👍 6.5/10
