Dove guardare Rebel Ridge
- Rebel Ridge takes a fairly stereotypical story and makes it its own. At the beginning, you might feel like you've already seen this story played out a hundred times, a Rambo-esque start. However, the movie kind of swaps things in subtle ways that compound once it finishes. Instead of a trained good cop, it is now a random person just trying to get his cousin out of jail. Instead of a bloody rampage, the character at every turn tries to keep things civil, tries to prevent unnecessary death. The end result is a movie that feels like it has more to say about systemic injustice and a man trying to navigate it the best he can. I appreciated this aspect of it, but I also feel like the movie suffers from being overlong unnecessarily, with the middle being a bit slow. It also doesn't really reckon with the racial aspect outside of the beginning. It's sort of there in the subtext initially, but it quickly becomes about general corruption instead of that. Finally, I found the very ending a bit anticlimactic and strange. I think I understand what the director was going for, but it came across almost like it undercut some of the messaging as well as not really being developed enough over the course of the movie.
- Rebel Ridge is a clever, fast‑paced action thriller that wastes no time pulling you into its world. What impressed me most is how the film weaves real‑world issues—particularly civil forfeiture and the corruption it can breed in small municipalities—into a gripping, high‑energy narrative. Rather than feeling preachy, these themes are integrated naturally, giving the story weight without slowing its momentum. The movie also touches on the growing militarization of local police forces, adding another layer of tension that feels uncomfortably relevant. The action sequences are tight and well‑executed, keeping the pace brisk and the stakes high. Several cast members feel perfectly matched to their roles, bringing depth and personality that elevate the material beyond standard genre fare. Rebel Ridge succeeds as both an entertaining thrill ride and a sharp commentary on systemic abuse, making it a surprisingly thoughtful entry in the action genre.
- What could have been a standard "small town corrupt cops" action thriller ends up being a lot more, due to clever twists on the premise and great acting from Aaron Pierre. It's nice to see an "ex-Marine" protagonist that isn't a grizzled combat vet who fires as many pithy one-liners as he does bullets. Instead, he's calm and steady and uses his head instead of guns. This movie won't win awards, but it's definitely worthy of watching, as a more-than-solid ride that's entertaining until the end.
