He'd still be the champ if he beat his opponent as hard as he beat his wife

This is going to be my least favourite Scorsese Movie. I do not have any problem with the direction, the black and white cinematography, the screenplay, the acting, everything is spot on. But something is missing in the entire storyline, at least how it has been put together and visualised, and perhaps that's why it was a box office bomb.

It's a painful masterpiece of performance and direction very specific for the time it was made. A curious antibiotic deconstructing the hero's journey, and betraying what would have been the previous generations more curious of stories of a boxer who fell from grace. It was difficult for me to watch, I could just only feel pity and pain swirling down a paranoic self-destructive prison that was Jake LaMotta.

I’m too high for this level of paranoia I forgot he even had a brother by the end! Also the overlap with On The Waterfront is odd! Budd Schulberg (the traitor) had to have known who Jake La Motta was when writing the story! All of the parallels / coincidences / ironies of De Niro giving the On The Waterfront speech are fucking with me hard. Him and Brando both won TWO Oscars for playing the same characters!? 🤯 He was truly following in Brando’s footsteps! So strange and funny! Oldest 15 year old I’ve ever seen! 40 years later and Marty still refuses to cast two people for the same character e.g. The Irishman Paul Schrader is such a romantic!

Raging Bull is Scorsese at the height of his dark age, turning the boxing ring into a cage for Jake LaMotta’s demons. De Niro transforms his body and soul, delivering a performance so brutal it feels like you’re watching a man self-destruct in real time. The black-and-white cinematography makes every punch sting deeper, every silence cut sharper, until you realize the fight was never in the ring — it was in the hollow spaces of a ruined life.

Acting so good that you’ll be thoroughly depressed.

Almost hard to watch tragedy. Jealousy enveloped him to the point of self destruction. De Niro, Moriarty and Pesci are great.
