The plot of the film is based on the story of the boy Romka Begunkov with a difficult character, who lacks faith in people, love and friendship. Only one true friend - a small dog named Plut, lives with Roma in the foster family of the Ryakhins. The unbearably difficult and sometimes very cruel life in this house forces Roma to go to the extreme, to run away, saving his life and the life of the faithful dog Plut. Having escaped from the "home", Roma accidentally ends up in a military unit, in the midst of military exercises. Army everyday life and a strict daily routine turned out to be a difficult test for Romka. Acquaintance, and subsequently friendship with the daughter of the regiment commander, Sveta, awakens in the boy, feelings unfamiliar to him.
