‘Obsession’ was a literal masterpiece, it created an atmosphere that was completely uncomfortable & filled with tension, matter of fact in my 26 years alive, all of which I have been a massive horror fan, I’ve never, ever felt this much discomfort & tension in a horror movie, I mean that in the best way possible, from start to finish I was completely captivated, this is most likely my new favourite horror movie of all time. I left the theatre shaking & was still tense for hours afterwards. It didn’t simply scare me in the moment; it latched onto my nervous system & followed me out of the theatre. Starting off small but still crucial, the complexity of the characters & their dynamics is exceptionally crafted, the relationships are interwoven phenomenally & really contribute to the story in a meaningful way, each character’s relationship with eachother character is unique & crucial to the events of the film, Nobody feels disposable here. This film masterfully uses prolonged shots to force the viewer into a state of visceral uncomfortability by dragging out eerie scenes of Nikki, examples include the tense scene when Nikki attacks Sarah & it drags on for what feels like forever, another example is the numerous shots where possessed Nikki just stares, uncannily smiles or a combination of both like when bear manages to leave through the door she ductaped shut & she stands there smiling waiting for him to return that night, when he initially leaves, the shot of her standing there eerily smiling is held for WAY too long forcing the viewer to feel extremely tense & uncomfortable. There are so many scenes where the shots are purposefully prolonged excruciatingly long to build an unbearable amount of tension in the viewer. Although though I describe it as unbearable & excruciating, don’t misconstrue me, it is perfect, even though it’s excruciating for the viewer it is perfect at building the atmosphere. It understands that silence, stillness & waiting can be more violent to the audience than the scare itself. Despite the many jumpscares, some of the most effective horror of this movie is psychological. Jumpscare horror & psychological horror are usually 2 different mediums/genres but rarely does a horror movie actually manage to balance both, even rarer is balancing both as effectively as this film did. This film is truly a masterpiece in ways I cannot begin to describe. This film is MUCH better experienced in theatres, I implore everybody that hasn’t seen it yet, to please go experience this in cinemas rather than wait for it to hit streaming/BluRay, this experience is best when viewed as loud as only theatres can produce on screen as large as only theatres can produce. You will certainly still love it if you watch at home but it’s very rare to find a film that is as crucial to watch in theatres as this one, you are robbing yourself of the experience if you don’t go see this in cinemas rather than at home. I also want to point out that I, along with probably 99% of the male population have a new instant crush on Inde Navarrette, she is so beautiful & has a really fun personality that shines through in both the BTS footage as well as in the actual movie, I could honestly be just as susceptible as Bear to wishing for her to love me lol, she’s literally perfect. But way more importantly, Inde Navarrette’s performance in this film is quite possibly the BEST acting performance I’ve ever seen, rivalling Ledger’s Joker, Waltz’s Hans Landa & Pacino’s Scarface. I’m not the only one saying this, upon Googling to see if I was just glazing I wasn’t surprised to see real credible discussions about her performance being debated as a potential “Top 5 acting performances in film history”, I’m not joking, I want to make it so, so clear I agree with this sentiment, my sample size isn’t just cookie cutter mainstream superhero films either, I watch very obscure, artsy films, I’ve seen most of the film noirs from the 40s & 50s, I’ve seen all the classic horror films including super obscure stuff most people have never heard about, I’ve seen countless pretentious dramas, so as a certified cinephile, who has seen virtually all the films up for discussion I can adamantly declare Inde’s performance as a literal top 5 performance of all time, I don’t think a performance as captivating & exceptional as hers will come along in a LONG time, I hope I’m alive to see it, but as for now she’s definitely in the discussion. She doesn’t just play possession, fear, seduction or emptiness separately; she blends them into one constantly shifting presence that feels human one second & completely wrong the next. Director Curry Barker is virtually dancing on genius territory for this film, I am so excited to see what else he makes, I hope he gets to continue to create original ideas like he did here & that it wasn’t just “lightning captured in a bottle” fluke. I am excited to see his adaptation of the new ‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ franchise, I vehemently hope despite all the much deserved success he receives from this film that he still manages to post his usual YouTube comedy skits with Cooper Tomlinson. In that note in case I’ve neglected to mention it; The progression of Curry Barker is spitting image of Jordan Peele, the comedy skits Curry & Cooper do in their YouTube channel is reminiscent of Key & Peeles sketches, then progressing into writing & directing original & artsy horror films is also much like Jordan Peele, it’s deja vu, for all intents & purposes, Curry Barker is the next Jordan Peele. I’m just ecstatic for everybody involved in the production of this, Curry, Inde, Cooper, Chloe, Michael & Megan, everybody delivers & I am super proud of them for what they created. Because of the countless easter eggs & hidden details in the film I’d like to touch on a couple. The ending features a chillingly quiet visual detail that many viewers overlook during the initial shock of the finale. In the final scene, Nikki is trying to mimic Sarah. If you look closely, she is wearing Sarah’s exact dress, has drawn Sarah's tattoos onto her own skin with a Sharpie & is even wearing her actual scalp/hair. It highlights the horrific depth of the distortion. Nikki is no longer a person; she’s been completely hollowed out into a grotesque vessel designed solely to mirror whatever twisted version of "the perfect partner" the wish dictates. Also when possessed Nikki is being scary & says “I don’t like my dreams” it’s because she has to share her dreams with the real Nikki, which in the midst of her trauma is probably experiencing terrifying nightmares that possessed Nikki also suffers. There’s also a theory that I share amongst other viewers that the weird shiny yellow cat-like reflection in Nikki’s eyes that occurs numerous times is possessed Nikki mimicking Bear’s cats eyes as a subtle trick to make him more in love with her. A bitter fact about the story is that Nikki actually did have a crush on Bear too & if he wasn’t spineless/cowardly & confessed his feelings for her when she gave him the chance, that the whole thing could have been avoided, the general consensus between director Curry Barker & actress Inde Navarrette that they discussed is that she did in fact have a crush on him too. One thing Curry Barker executed MASTERFULLY was that they shot the interactions in the beginning twice, one way which Nikki very blatantly had a crush on Bear & another that she very clearly has him strictly friendzoned, they then spliced the 2 together so in the final product we have the gift of ambiguity, allowing the viewer to interpret it the way they’d prefer, which is really nice & creative. However despite that they said they agreed publicly that she did in fact have a reciprocated crush on Bear too, that makes the events that follows so much more tragic. The real Nikki is in a sort of constantly painful purgatory while still feeling & experiencing everything that possessed Nikki is doing, this is why the One Wish Willow customer service representative was able to connect the real Nikki on the phone & you hear her bloodcurdling screaming. This is also why she’s able to briefly take back the shortest moments of control, I believe that possessed Nikki is stronger & more powerful which is why she has constant control however when the initial hookup occurs the level of shock real Nikki experiences by experiencing this while not being in control is so great she momentarily gains control of her body again while she’s freaking out because her shock for a moment was more powerful than possessed Nikki, this also implies the reason she was able to gain enough control briefly to beg Bear to kill her & end her suffering in purgatory is because when possessed Nikki was asleep she was in a low power hibernation state that real Nikki was briefly able to overpower. Between ‘Obsession’ & ‘Backrooms’ I am thrilled that the stellar & unbelievable success in the box office for these original film ideas from young unknown directors making their debut’s on such low budgets by going against the blueprint & daring to be different is going to shake up Hollywood & sends a message to try new creative things. Even while still in their theatrical runs reports have come out that Hollywood has been scouring communities like Reddit for original ideas for horror movies. I am so excited to to see what stuff we will get now the message has been sent that we’re tired of cookie cutter sequels & reboots, between ‘Obsession’ & ‘Backrooms’ alone nearly totalling a combined Billion dollars by their 3rd weeks in theatres off micro budgets, I am hopeful the tide will change & we will see some new creative stuff soon. It’s a great year to be a horror fan that’s for sure. 10/10 (Masterpiece / Top tier / Instant favorite).

This movie shines in its ability to pervade nearly every moment with an ineffable, but nonetheless palpable sense of anxiety and dread, pulling the viewer's state of mind in lockstep with Bear's. And it's all the more impressive for the fact that there's two stark moments where all of it dissipates and feels super relaxed and chill: each time Bear and Sarah have a one on one. The dynamic the two of them have sitting on the floor of the music store, and then later in the car, you can just feel how comfortable and at ease they are with each other (and we can sense it in the latter scene even though we're dreading what is surely to come. And it does, and even having expected it, it's more horrible than we'd feared) which makes the anxiousness feel even more oppressive having gotten outside of it for fleeting moments. That said, despite the fact the movie does a tonally perfect job of instilling the protagonist's emotions into the viewer, it also makes it clear that he is not a sympathetic or good character at all. There are multiple moments where, even though it's far too late to manage anything that could be considered "the right thing," he's too scared and self-conserving to make anything less terrible for Nikki or Ian or Sarah or even himself, ironically. The movie's use of near dark and near silhouette is unmatched. I've never seen anything like it. Nikki being nearly completely obscured but with just enough detail to have your mind's eye fill in a sort of distorted, creepy, monstrous version of her was perfect. And those eyes shining out of the shadows. Amazing. I don't know if Inde Navarrette just has Jim Carrey level talent, or if CG was used to help exaggerate her expressions, but either way they were legendary, the absolute perfect mix of unsettling and silly. All of her expressions, mannerisms, movements, and line delivery always perfectly toed the line between bizarre and horrifying. And the movie doesn't make the mistake of feeling the need to do a huge lore dump in the third act, which is amazing. We absolutely get enough to draw some conclusions, without spoiling any of the mystery or distracting from the horror. Just a phenomenal horror film, top to bottom.

Why did Bear wait until she killed someone to go back into the store. This entire movie would not have happened if Bear just went into the store earlier and made Sarah, the one who actually has malice of Nikki, and therefore would believe bear, make the wish. That was atrocious

This movie was very good. It was one of the most scariest movies I have ever watched. This movie had great cinematography, great acting and also a soundtrack that really added to the horror. I definitely recommend this movie if you are hard-core horror fan as this relies more on making the viewer uncomfortable than uncontrollable killing and gore.
