Poverty, drugs, abuse, and senseless violence are just as shocking and impactful today, but it's the seemingly unbreakable social and family ties that seem particularly strange from our modern perspective of ghosting and individualism. Today we shut people out with casual disregard, but for these impoverished brits it is unthinkable, no matter what that have done to you emotionally or physically.
- stuhannaford18 marzo 2026A harrowing observation of working class life Britain in the 1990's, but more than enough for any age group to feel an understanding. There isn't quite so much of a story, per se, there's little in the way of directorial judgement, and the end doesn't deliver a Hollywood message. Faults, hopes, circumstance, social and economic conditions... they are all just laid bare, giving the viewer an almost voyeuristic experience. At its finale, any opinions are left for you to decide upon, and your moral compass chooses what can be explained, reasoned or accepted. The lulls in story, simply deliver a false sense of security as they intersect moments of incredibly uncomfortable scenes of violence and abuse. It's hard to pick standout performances, as so many are excellent. However, Burke and Winstone's interactions are hard to ignore. The terror and fear on one, balanced by furious anger and animalistic aggression on the other, as the two interact and react to each other, really is tough to swallow at times. At no point enjoyable, but captivating nonetheless.
