The fact is, the awkward first hour of drudgery is actually in service of the quite remarkable second-half set-piece which is like nothing I've ever really seen before and it's likely something I will think about for the rest of my days. A purposely paced and deeply moving bleak painting. If you have a spare Sunday afternoon (and a heart) do try to persevere with it.
- P & J4 gg faI was going to write a lukewarm review, and then I realized that I was looking at a true time capsule of depression-era America. Two sets of my own great-great-great grandparents were forced to split up and live with different children during the depression. They lost everything, and were treated the same way by their ungrateful children. Knowing that back in those days, my family seldom missed movie night every week, I’m sure some of them must have seen this in 1937. I wonder if any of it registered with them? As for the movie, it’s full of veterans you’ve seen before. True professionals. The acting is impeccable. You’ll be annoyed by grandma sometimes. We might not like the story, but it’s real, and as happy as it could realistically be at the end. I hope that’s not a spoiler.
