- DavidBunnyDad3 gg faVince Vaughn and Jon Favreau became household names with the classic 1996 comedy Swingers. Virtually no one knows this, but they actually made a similar but far superior comedy a few years later, a kind of spiritual sequel in which they play a couple wannabe wise guys in LA who do odd jobs for a local gangster played by Peter Falk. Our heroes are dispatched to New York for a simple money drop, but things go awry thanks mainly to Vaughn's escalating determination to behave like his idea of a ``made'' guy (this is a man who's seen way too many Dean Martin movies). In addition to Falk, who's wonderful, Made offers the film debut of P. Diddy, and able support from Faizon Love, Sopranos favorite Vincent Pastore and Famke Janssen in the thankless girlfriend role. But it's Vaughn who steals the show. His clueless, swaggering bull-in-a-China shop routine never stops being riotously funny. It's like his Swingers character lost 50 IQ points but somehow gained twice the confidence. The pleasures of watching these two quarreling goofballs try to make the most of their time in the Big Apple cannot be overstated. Highlights include Vaughn's oblivious attempts to woo a first-class flight attendant who couldn't be less interested, his cringy try at impressing Diddy with TV cop-show lingo over mimosas at the Russian Tea Room, and an unforgettable sight gag that finds Vaughn and Favreau crammed into a child-sized table at a decidedly unmasculine tea joint named The Cupping Room, after our would-be playboys can't get into a nightclub. How this movie did not become a cult classic escapes me. It easily has as many quotable lines as, say, Step Brothers or Dumb and Dumber. The whims of history, I suppose. For my money, Made stands shoulder to shoulder with This is Spinal Tap and Airplane as one of the funniest movies I've ever seen.
