Seeing this adaptation so soon after the 1934 film highlighted just how differently the same story could be told. From a production standpoint, Jud Süß is undeniably polished, with a level of technical craftsmanship that makes it easy to understand why it has remained one of the most discussed films of its era. Ferdinand Marian throws himself into the title role, though I thought his performance occasionally crossed the line from theatrical into something almost cartoonish. Even so, there was never any doubt that the cast and filmmakers approached the material with complete conviction. As the film went on, though, I found myself becoming less invested in the drama itself and more interested in what the film represents historically. The characters rarely felt like fully realized people, which made it difficult to stay emotionally engaged despite the stronger production values. In the end, I believe the conversation surrounding the film is more compelling than the film itself. That left me viewing Jud Süß less as a satisfying historical drama and more as an important artifact from one of cinema's most controversial chapters.
