My quick rating - 5.3/10. Another nicely polished Netflix movie, this time taking hypnosis and ramping up what can be done with it. In this case, a manipulative psychiatrist is using hypnotherapy to induce basically anything he wants into his patients. Ok, I'll digress a bit. At a get-together to try and get Kate Siegels character, Jenn, a bit of relaxation and her mind off of a tragic miscarriage, she is introduced to our wonderful psych. Reluctantly, she does agree to go and meet up with our good doctor (Jason O'Mara) and is actually finding some success in his treatment. But when he suggests that Jenn meet up with her ex for dinner to get over her anxiety, things go horribly wrong when a mysterious phone call leads her into a memory lapse. The next thing she knows, she is at her dinner table alone while her ex is dying on the floor. Since the trailer and synopsis basically give away the story, I can assume you know what is going on. The idea of the control that is used in this is what makes this borderline horror, although I am not taking that leaning. It does lead to a few creepy moments with the ability to control others. The way that the doc has placed certain triggers into his patients, further than you initially know, is quite disturbing. Also, the way that those messages can be used to get away with anything is a frightening thought. As I said, everything is in place from acting to camerawork, as most of their productions are. I just found that with such a really nice premise, they just didn't take it to any extreme or come up with a real punch. So while being entertained throughout the movie, I felt unsatisfied when it was done. But I do give extra points for the detective that she turns to, who happened to have investigated the doctor previously and couldn't find any evidence of wrongdoing. I don't think it was some major coincidence that Dulé Hill was cast in this role at all. If you know why I say that, then it will Psych you out in the end.
