“Hellfighters” is a rare non-Western for John Wayne, though they still slip him into a cowboy hat now and then. It’s a melodrama where oil fires bring the action, but the pacing drags, especially through the forced romance and family drama that never quite land. Wayne feels miscast in the love story, a bit too old for the part they gave him. If you're working your way through his catalog, it's worth a look, but otherwise, it's easily forgotten.

Hellfighters isn’t a great film by John Wayne standards, and it’s certainly not what he’s most famous for, but I still find it oddly enjoyable. What makes it interesting is the unique subject matter: specialist firefighters who risk their lives putting out massive oil well fires. Even when the script wobbles, the core idea remains fascinating, and the action scenes around the towering flames are genuinely compelling. The character Wayne plays is based on a real, extraordinary man who accomplished an incredible feat in this dangerous line of work, and the movie does try—if somewhat loosely—to honour that. Around this, you get the usual Hollywood trimmings: family drama, romantic subplots, and a bit of cornball dialogue thrown in for good measure. It’s dated and uneven, but as a glimpse into a rarely depicted profession, Hellfighters has enough charm and spectacle to be worth a watch, especially for Wayne completists.
