“Flying Leathernecks” is a war film steeped in patriotism and command, with John Wayne embodying the classic “tough but right” leader. At its core is the clash between Wayne’s strict discipline and Robert Ryan’s more compassionate approach, a tension that war throws into sharp focus. It’s a by-the-book story of duty, sacrifice, and chain of command, elevated by the leads’ performances and solid aerial combat scenes. If you’re craving old-school valor and no-nonsense leadership, this one delivers.

It’s amazing what qualified as good drama in this era. I supposed movies and the profession of acting were somewhat in their infancy, and making sure a story-line actually got through to the audience often involved turbo-charging a toilet plunger down the throats of an audience that didn’t quite know what to expect. The writing in this movie is plastic at best. The acting wooden and ridiculously exaggerated in a way that can only be explained by the fact that actors were still being trained to perform on a stage, where micrphones and viewpoints were often hampered by distances, so everything had to be done with the volume turned to 11. There is little more than adults ham-fistedly playing army in this stodgy, boiler-plate propaganda piece only made palatable by some real footage of WWII era aircraft that only true warbirds buff can eat up. The realism is cartoon level Tonka Toys, the characters little more than Hollywood tropes spouting by now tired old lines that we have all learned to cringe at when we hear them.
