- Jacob O’Neal14 aprile 2026Bobby Kennedy III is the writer/director of this story about Hunter S. Thompson running for Sheriff of Aspen, Colorado. Kennedy got his step mother Cheryl Hinds to play a small part in the film. The movie isn’t bad. But it misses the mark. The performance of Thompson by Jay Bulger felt a little like he was doing a Johnny Depp impression of Hunter S. Thompson instead of trying to embody the man himself. There were moments that felt authentic but it was uneven. As for my other complaint - Thompson’s writing is unusual. He writes journalism where he becomes the main story of the article. To portray this in the movie it needs to be him as a story teller in the first person. They did voice over, but there should never have been moments where other characters are plotting and scheming behind his back. By doing so it breaks the spell that Thompson had in his books and articles. The movie itself was a fun semi-true story of a time where Thompson actually ran for sheriff of Aspen and nearly won. It was an interesting slice of the man’s life that felt more grounded and relatable than Las Vegas. The shooting cast was quite good and seems to be enjoying themselves in this movie. All in all, this movie is enjoyable. But if you’re looking to have an idea of what it would be like to be in the mind of the madman, check out Las Vegas instead of Aspen. But what do I know?
