La storia è narrata dalla sua giovane segretaria, Traudl Junge, che visse quei giorni col Fuhrer e i suoi fedelissimi. L'esercito russo sta ormai circondando Berlino, la capitale è un cumulo di macerie e la sconfitta della Germania è inevitabile. All'interno del bunker, durante i festeggiamenti per il 56° compleanno del Fürhrer, in molti, fra cui il Ministro degli Interni Himmler, pregano Hitler affinché lasci Berlino per un luogo più sicuro. Nel frattempo, in superficie, alcuni ragazzini della Gioventù Hitleriana combattono ancora: uno di loro, il tredicenne Peter, è orgoglioso di aver distrutto due carri armati russi. Suo padre lo implora di tornare a casa ma il ragazzino tenacemente rifiuta. Quando i russi giungono nel centro di Berlino nessuno può più negare la sconfitta, neppure il giovanissimo Peter che troverà i suoi genitori assassinati da uno squadrone della morte.

It's a rather unique POV that works. Spending virtually the entire movie inside Hitler's bunker and amongst his inner circle is as intriguing to the mind as it is unsettling to the soul.
