Y’all probably never even heard of it. But I watched this movie religiously as a kid because—no big deal—I literally grew up around the corner from the Fat Boys, and yes, they bought us pizza sometimes. You think Oppenheimer ever bought me a slice? Didn’t think so. This movie is pure comfort food, in every sense. It’s about three lovable, chaotic guys who accidentally become orderlies for a rich old white man—and instead of killing him (like one might expect from three human hurricanes in scrubs), they somehow give him a reason to live. It’s goofy, it’s sweet, and it made sense to me as a kid in a way that probably wouldn’t hold up under the cold scrutiny of adulthood… but you know what? I don’t care. • The Fat Boys had surprising chemistry • There was eating (a lot of it) • There was joy • And there was this weird, funky morality tale about how money’s not everything, but a pizza party with friends just might be Do I remember every plot detail? No. Do I trust that it aged gracefully? Also no. But do I cherish this movie in the sacred VHS vault of my mind? ABSOLUTELY. Until I rewatch and potentially ruin it, this one stays in my golden childhood memory box labeled: “Surprisingly wholesome chaos.”
