It could have been good but there were too many things that were either too convenient or felt really contrived. The movie had its ups and downs in terms of quality throughout its runtime.

This movie was a waste of time. Very boring. Hated every minute of this.

“This 79-year terror campaign of lies has to end!" Yasss Stephen go off king 🇵🇸🍉🍉🇵🇸 Mysterious Skin x Independence Day with The Day The Earth Stood Still’s messaging Steven wants to fuck an alien so bad. Not gonna happen in your lifetime buddy! (Unless it already has???) “Whoa.” “Whoa.” What dialogue. Yeah Stephen nature’s beautiful. Did you never go outside while making all these banger films?? If not, take your own advice and maybe have a little furlough Whoever made the Mysterious Skin comparison nailed it. It’s curiously similar, Stephen! Curious!! I’m just saying, if you weren’t happy with the ending, you could have just emailed Gregg Araki. Most aloof FBI agents of all time lmfao O’Connell’s character is a fucking idiot. How does the man who understands everything not understand anything going on around him smh Also people would not be that still if those truths came out lmao The highlights of Emily’s powers are better employed in many other sci-fis…including *burrrp* Rick & Morty Why did the knife hurt Colin Firth but not the crucifix Hollywood is having a Christianity resurrection! (Or maybe that’s just part of Colman’s contract???) An entire plot about the government trying to suppress information / speech / content (lol) is right on the money for Stevie!! MILD SPOILER ⬇️ I did like the bit about corporations really being behind it tho Very cute how the bad guys and good guys are just friends in the end 👬 It’s such a simple message it reminds me of Don’t Look Up lol “You are not alone” made me gag It made some older people start getting philosophical in the lobby afterwards so hey, it’s sparking discussion! Note: I hate the default poster for this film. It looks like a fucking axillary crutch. Watched in IMAX at Regal Warren West Currently Ranked #80/98 in 2026 Ranked Added to Extraterrestrial Excellence (it’s at the end of the list tho)

Aliens. Cover-ups. Shadowy, quasi-governmental organizations out to get you. Steven Spielberg. This had all of the ingredients to make a stellar movie, but somehow it just doesn't really come together. The individual pieces are fine, and Emily Blunt's performance in particular is quite good, but the movie as a whole just kind of meanders and really feels like there's something missing. Definitely can't say it justifies a theater viewing, but it'll be fine for streaming.

The review is only for the film's technical merit, i disliked it, terrible story idea from Spielberg, paced pooly and alot of cringe. Where as CETK was world centric, this felt very isolated to the U.S. and christianity. The ending is just poor

There are traces of "Close Encounters," "The X-Files," "Minority Report" in Emily Blunt's empathetic powers and even M. Night's "Signs" in yet another search for extraterrestrial life among us. But it's done with consummate skill and energy that belies Spielberg's age and that's what summer calls for.

A decent movie, but not on the same level as some his other works.

third encounters reframed and recontextualized to fit a narrative about empathy in a world rapidly losing it, without seemingly understanding or engaging with the zeitgeist of said modern world. the power of the motion picture is strong, and i could feel a surge of emotions welling up within me and in my tear ducts at several moments during the film, but it never got me to actually cry or fully buy into the message, and i think it’s because of how disjointed its messaging is. there’s an inherent political history to the alien craze that’s pervaded american culture since its inception in the early 20th century, and yet the film tries to assert that conspiracy theory and government coverup battles exists out of some misguided goodwill and concern from the government and its contractors regarding how the global public would receive this dissemination of information, as opposed to the way conspiracy theory echo chambers and rabbit holes have historically exacerbated extremist right-wing rhetoric and influenced a culture of scientific and journalistic distrust, and the united states government’s motives for obfuscation of truth have historically never been well-intentioned. the film is disinterested in the geopolitical climate of the modern zeitgeist, yet also believes there’s a higher truth that can unite us all if we all just looked and believed. it’s naïve and disillusioned, especially considering just this year the white house has tried multiple times to release “classified footage” of ufo’s and extraterrestrial activity to divert attention from the epstein files. the most interesting moment in this film is the scene where margaret and daniel finally dive into their repressed memories and the aliens, disguised as friendly fauna, guide child margaret to a cabin in the woods, a thomas kinkade christmas painting-esque cabin in the woods, where she’s then given the “gift” of universal empathy. it’s contrasted with daniel’s abject terror at reliving this memory, and it’s difficult not to read this as an analogy for child sexual abuse, a sinister manipulation of nostalgia and a luring of victims. then there’s also the inextricable stories of probing that accompany alien abduction stories, and this causes a stark dichotomy between what the film is trying to convey and the historical context of its elements. i could be reading too much into all of these things, but i feel like a film so concerned with the modern world and the nature of conspiracy theories needs to reckon with the real world’s dilemmas and sociopolitical climate. instead, its rallying cry towards community and empathy falls on deaf ears. i do like the focus on empathy, and i can see why it worked for many people, and sequences like the dive into jane and the ensuing chase are thrilling, but i left the film feeling ambivalent or torn in some way. a lot of people are comparing this with project hail mary as science fiction hopecore, but i did not feel hopeful once the credits ended. just… unsure.

rename the movie to disappointment day.

Boring. Close Encounters is a much better movie.

I really feel like what this movie needed to elevate it to great is a few more scenes of government agents swarming a location from all directions in unmarked black cars. Maybe I’m just a bit of a pessimist, but I think the way Spielberg and I think everyone, near and far, would react during the last 10-15 minutes is very different.

I had kept my expectations low, but I still didn't expect such nonsense. All the praise given because of the Spielberg name is a real shame. It's an inconsistent, flimsy aberration that tries too hard to be serious and unfortunately makes it obvious; it also tries too hard to be emotional and doesn't even manage to show it. When the bought-in approval wears off, the overall audience score will quickly drop to 4 or 5 out of 10. My disappointment is much greater. 1 out of 5.

This was somehow both better and worse than I expected

Cool and interesting concepts explored throughout, but the movie felt very convoluted. Moments that were supposed to be eerie or meaningful felt comical instead. The climax of the film feels extremely lackluster. The audience knows what we’re building up to the whole movie, and we’re rewarded with some horrible looking CGI. Disclosure Day is decently entertaining, but I don’t see myself ever rewatching it.
