It’s the kind of movie that keeps making you wonder whether you’re watching a dark comedy, a ghost story, or just one long fever dream, and honestly the answer is probably all three. I admired it more than I loved it: the imagery is gorgeous, the oddball humor lands more often than you’d expect, and the whole thing has that unmistakable “important art film” energy, but it’s also so strange and self-consciously arty that it feels like the kind of movie most people only need to experience once.
- Desmond Dale24 gennaio 2025Jim's style is hyper concentrated here with all of his trademarks and signatures all over it. It's a black n white film with high contrast and lots of wide angles so you can really breathe in the environment and ambiance which is at times nearly as fascinating as the center of focus. What I love about Dead Man is that it's a deep movie and it's also incredibly simplistic as well. It's an adventure film centered around a psychedelic trip with the end in clear view and yet despite its morbid fatalistic plot the film ends up feeling breezy and largely comedic. It's kind of like a western version of Easy Rider. The ending is both bittersweet and serene, beautiful.
- edward quin15 marzo 2025An exquisitely formed vision that elicits the tragic absurdity of the western genocide. Gary Farmer as Nobody is as compelling and as unforgettable as Falstaff. The whole cast and their comings and goings are as fascinating as Shakespeare would have made them and all of it made sublime by the soundtrack. The best Western ever made.
